What will I gain in this session?
You’re looking at this page for one of a few reasons: (1) You’re stuck and don’t know what to do — there’s something about your presentation you don’t like, but you don’t know why. Or, you don’t know how to apply what you’ve learned to a specific presentation. Well, during a session, you’ll learn exactly what isn’t working in your presentation file AND how to not get stuck there in the future. (2) You don’t know if you did it right — you’re feeling unsure about whether you’ve applied the lessons from the course in the right way. Well, during a session, I’ll provide tailored feedback about what you did well and areas to improve. (3) You need some inspiration and want to take this to the next level — One of the main advantages of this session is that I will redesign your slides right before your eyes. That means you’ll see some behind-the-scenes slide design strategies (while being able to ask me any questions about what I’m doing and why. This is awesome for a few reasons: My slide design services start at $1,500 USD, so this is a super affordable way for me to design some of your slides. You’ll learn how to design your slides in a faster, more effective way in the future. You will see me design your slides in a way you didn’t even realize was possible, which will unlock a whole new level of creativity for you moving forward.

Am I going to feel embarrassed, judged, or shamed about how bad my slides are?
In grad school, I remember being scared to ask my mentor questions or show her my work, because I was worried she would be disappointed in me somehow. That I hadn’t “learned enough yet” or that she’s “not seeing enough improvement.” I was always worried that I wouldn’t be “enough” for her help. What a horrible mistake! I missed out on so many opportunities for growth and regret it. So, I know what that’s like and I want to reassure you that I am not going to be disappointed in you, or think that you didn’t apply the lessons “enough.” I provide training using an empowerment approach that’s designed to make you feel like a rockstar. Yes, I will tell you areas that need to be improved. Otherwise, this would be a waste of your time and money. But, it’s all done in a positive, supportive way.

How far in advance should I book a session?
That’s up to you. My calendar settings require 2-5 days’ notice before the session, so keep that in mind. If possible, I recommend you book a session 4-6 weeks before your presentation. That sounds like a lot of time, but I only recommend that so you aren’t super stressed out when applying my recommendations. And, for really important presentations (job talks, teaching demos, keynotes), most people do 2-3 sessions, so it’ll give us time for that just in case you want that option. This is almost always possible for conference presentations and keynotes, when you get accepted a few months before the conference date. This is rarely possible for a job talk/teaching demo, however, because you often don’t get that much notice. In that case, we should have our session ASAP. As in, come here and book a time the DAY you get the invite. I will do my best to adjust what recommendations I give based on how much time you’ll have to apply them before the presentation.

Oh, no! You don’t have any time available before my job talk or teaching demo!
Email me with the date of your job talk/teaching demo. If I can adjust my schedule, I will. I ONLY do this for job talks/teaching demos, though. Note: our business hours are Monday through Friday, and please still allow 2 business days for me to reply!

How far along should I be in the design before we meet?
In most cases, we should meet sooner rather than later because I often have recommendations for: your storyboard (e.g., how your content is organized, ideas for how to build a narrative into your talk) and how to make it easier to design your slides (which will save you time as you continue to work on your slide design). With that said, you will get the most value out of the session if we can focus on the storyboard, data visualizations (quant, quant, or mixed methods), or advanced design. So, I recommend that you at least do the basics before we meet. What basics, you ask? Excellent question! These basics: No clutter, minimum font size, widescreen slide size (16:9), no distorted images. Details about these are already covered in your course, and apply to every single presentation. If I see some issues with the above list, we will need to address those first in the session, because they’re foundational aspects of presentation design. So, address those before meeting with me, if you can. Ultimately, it’s up to YOU when you book and how far along we are. These are only suggestions to ensure that spend the entire 60-minute on the most advanced techniques that are tailored to your unique presentation.

What is the rescheduling and refund policy?
I structure my entire day (sometimes my entire week) around these calls, so there are no refunds in the case of cancellation. If you need to reschedule the meeting, you can do so (once) if there is at least 24 hours before our session. However, there is no guarantee I will be able to accommodate the change in schedule. And, if I can’t accommodate the change in time, the session will be cancelled without refund.

“Yes, I learned several critical skills to create effective presentations, but what means even more to me than tangible skills is the confidence I gained as a presenter!”
I am an undergrad of the mid 90’s who stumbled into the world of Powerpoint without any formal instruction. I spent my career as a diabetes educator inheriting mediocre slides from predecessors and colleagues while convincing myself that my slides were “fine” and my good oral presentation skills would just make up for my not-so-stellar visuals. Fast forward to my PhD program…I started giving research presentations and teaching courses…and this is when I started to feel that my lack of effective and engaging visuals was affecting my confidence as a presenter and teacher. Instead of taking action, I quickly brushed those feelings aside with excuses…”too busy”, “too much work”,”too hard to learn”, etc. It took landing my first academic interview and job talk to really get honest with myself and admit that I needed help…and fast! Enter…Echo Rivera! I can’t begin to describe how relieved I was to discover Echo and tap into her services to coach me through my job talk presentation. I am now a proud graduate of several of Echo’s programs as well as her 1:1 private coaching. Yes, I learned several critical skills to create effective presentations, but what means even more to me than tangible skills is the confidence I gained as a presenter! And…I got the job!
–Amy Morel L’Horset, University Lecturer

“She…helped me storyboard my entire presentation and overall took the presentation a few levels higher than I thought my presentation could even go!”
I reached out to Echo about helping me out with my teaching demonstration presentation for a job talk interview for an assistant professor position. I felt decent about my slides but really wanted help in taking it to the next level… and boy did Echo deliver! She helped me really solidify a strong introduction that shifted focus from me to my audience, helped me storyboard my entire presentation, and overall took the presentation a few levels higher than I thought my presentation could even go! I ended up feeling much more confident about my presentation and, as a result, ended up doing a great presentation and getting a job offer! I will definitely be reaching out to Echo again in the future for any of my presentation needs.
